The dangers of “God said”…..

On any given congregational gathering, numerous ministers across the world fervidly speak the words “God said” or “God told me to tell you” in their motivational speeches. Often times what comes after is a statement that encourages a person to be their best self or on the contrary, a message that promotes material prosperity.

Although some of them mean well, these spoken words can be malevolent to a believer who is adamant about the idea of “God” speaking to a person’s mind. Coming from the mouth of a person they put all of their trust in, this gives the listener an ultimatum to believe what that leader says or else be damned. Especially when believers are taught that this Pastor or Bishop was given authority over the church to give instruction.

I will use a few examples that I have heard in my lifetime from evangelists or firm believers……

“God told me to tell you not to go to South America.”

“God said you’re going to be rich.”

“God said he wants…….for your life.”

“God told me to tell you to do this….”

When I was a believer, I was guilty of saying these words as well. I was programmed to mimic what someone else repeated to me. I remember waking up from dreams and sending texts to people saying, “God wanted me to tell you…” So I know from experience that sometimes we do these things with good intentions. But instead of saying “God said” it should have been “Tish said.” LOL. Because these things can ONLY be confirmed by the person who is saying it. No one else hears it.

Even the passages in the Bible that says, “God told..” or “God said”, I always wondered how could these things be confirmed? Who else heard it? But we were taught to just believe because it was recorded in book format. We were taught not to question the validity of “God’s” words.

“God” is saying a lot these days! In modern day, “God” is saying a lot that’s dealing with business or things that are appealing to materialism. But it’s rare to hear believers saying, “God said help feed the poor,” “God said live modest so that you can have peace,” etc. “God” in modern day is telling people to think more on a selfish level…telling people to pray for expensive cars and big homes! “God” is telling people to invest large sums of money into church buildings instead of helping the homeless find shelter. Very odd.

Some may think that saying “God said” is not really a big deal. So what, right? We all want nice things. It’s only going to encourage people to strive for the best in life. The Bible says….

Malachi 3:6 (KJV)

6 For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

But what is the irony when “God” told you to get that expensive vehicle and then goes back on “his” instructions by later telling you to give it back (BKA repo). Now your credit score is messed up and you have no vehicle. Or your house is foreclosed and you have no home. If “he” changes not, then was it really “God” that told you to live beyond your means in the first place? Whose voice was that in your mind? How do you distinguish between your own thoughts and “God” voice?

Yeah, I’ve heard people say that God is not going to tell you to do anything foolish or malicious. But that would be an unstudied Christian rebuttal based solely off of an emotion. Because all throughout the Bible, “God” is supposedly telling people to do things that are indeed questionable acts.

“God” allegedly tested Abraham by telling him to go and sacrifice his son.

Genesis 22:1-2
After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

“God” told Onan to have sex with his deceased brother’s wife and get her pregnant.

Genesis 38:6-10

“6Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. 7But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death.

8Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.” 9But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother. 10What he did was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death also.”

Throughout the Old Testament, God is giving instructions to leaders to murder individuals.

1 Samuel 15:1-3

1 Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one the LORD sent to anoint you king over his people Israel; so listen now to the message from the LORD. 2 This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’ ”

“God” is apparently LAUGHING at people for experiencing pain and misery after disregarding instruction.

Proverbs 1:26-28 Good News Translation (GNT)

26 So when you get into trouble, I will laugh at you. I will make fun of you when terror strikes— 27 when it comes on you like a storm, bringing fierce winds of trouble, and you are in pain and misery. 28 Then you will call for wisdom, but I will not answer. You may look for me everywhere, but you will not find me.

There’s a scripture that many go to in order to justify the enslavement of the native people in these various lands. They go to the Bible that is supposed to be directly from the mind of “God.” But what many Christians come short of realizing is the fact that the Bible is more political than “divinely inspired.” The popular verse that says…

Deuteronomy 28:68

The LORD will send you back in ships to Egypt on a journey I said you should never make again. There you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.

Many will be surprised that it never said that at all. This is the 1611 version compilated by King James and his colleagues.

The Codex Sinaiticus, which is an ancient reference to the Greek Bible, Hebrew Bible, and Septuagint, is believed to be written between 325 and 360 AD. It gives some insight to the reconstruction of the Bible. This above verse that we see today in modern Bible text actually says something completely different in the Codex Sinaiticus.

ϲεϲθ̣αι̣ εκ̣ει τοιϲ

εχθροιϲ υμων ειϲ

παιδαϲ και παιδι

ϲκαϲ και ουκ εϲτε

ο κτωμενοϲ

Thanks to the lovely tool of Google Translate, we are able to get a close understanding of what this means…even if it’s not a 100% accurate translation, we can get a general idea.

It says something to this sort…

Check it out

your enemies

child and child

and you have not

the poor man

Kind of choppy and worded weirdly. But I have to keep in mind that the manuscript was found in a sort of distorted manner. However, the little that is translated doesn’t appear to say anything about slaves or going in ships to Egypt. I have a sneaky suspicion that these things were added during the period of slave trade in order to use “GOD” to justify their savage acts towards anyone that opposed their controlling ways.

The Spanish Requirement of 1513 is the perfect example of this.

The English translation of the Spanish El Requierimento (Requirement) of 1513 reads: “On the part of the King, Don Fernando, and of Doña Juana, his daughter, Queen of Castille and León, subduers of the barbarous nations, we their servants notify and make known to you, as best we can, that the Lord our God, living and eternal, created the heaven and the earth, and one man and one woman, of whom you and we, and all the men of the world, were and are all descendants, and all those who come after us. Of all these nations God our Lord gave charge to one man, called St. Peter, that he should be lord and superior of all the men in the world, that all should obey him, and that he should be the head of the whole human race, wherever men should live, and under whatever law, sect, or belief they should be; and he gave him the world for his kingdom and jurisdiction. One of these pontiffs, who succeeded St. Peter as lord of the world in the dignity and seat which I have before mentioned, made donation of these isles and Terra Firma to the aforesaid King and Queen and to their successors, our lords, with all that there are in these territories, Wherefore, as best we can, we ask and require you that you consider what we have said to you, and you take the time that shall be necessary to understand and deliberate upon it, and that you acknowledge the Church as the ruler and superior of the whole world, But if you do not do this, and maliciously make delay in it, I certify to you that, with the help of God, we shall powerfully enter into your country, and shall make war against you in all ways and manners that we can, and shall subject you to the yoke and obedience of the Church and of their highnesses; we shall take you, and your wives, and your children, and shall make slaves of them, and as such shall sell and dispose of them as their highnesses may command; and we shall take away your goods, and shall do you all the mischief and damage that we can, as to vassals who do not obey, and refuse to receive their lord, and resist and contradict him: and we protest that the deaths and losses which shall accrue from this are your fault, and not that of their highnesses, or ours, nor of these cavaliers who come with us.”

Do you think that if there was a Creator, who is supposed to mimic a mother and father in most cultural traditions, he or she would have told someone this? I highly doubt it.

So evangelists and Christians across the planet, I know that some of your efforts may truly be genuine. But most of you do not know the historical illegitimacy of your religion and are acting purely off of emotions by spreading the God-spell. You are in reality doing the same thing these ancient evangelists were doing by trying to recruit others into your belief while simultaneously disregarding another person’s cultural practices or ideas related to their spiritual experiences.

This is why saying “God said” or “God told me to tell you” is dangerous to our society. How can we verify these claims that a voice spoke something into your brain? We can’t. In today’s world, if a person hears voices in their head, then they are labeled as having a mental disorder.

“It is estimated that between 5% and 28% of the general population hears voices that other people do not.

Hearing voices is an auditory hallucination that may or may not be associated with a mental health problem. It is the most common type of hallucination in people with psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. However, a large number of otherwise healthy individuals have also reported hearing voices……..

Traumatic life experiences (e.g. sexual abuse , neglect, loss of a parent) are considered to be among the most significant triggers of auditory hallucinations, particularly among children. As many as 70% of participants in one study reported that hearing voices started following a traumatic or significant emotional event.

When a person says “God said,” they often times don’t realize it makes them look mentally unwell. I remember in 2015, when I first broke free from the spell of religion, I heard voices of “God” giving me instruction. Reading the above psychological interpretation of this phenomenon, I now know that these voices were due to a traumatic life experience. I was breaking away from an 18 year old Christian indoctrination. So I can attest to this feeling of hearing voices and thinking that it was divinely inspired, when it was really just me and my own thoughts! I was trying to do and say anything to keep myself in this Christian belief.

I asked my 5-year-old daughter if she heard voices in her head, and her response was….”The only voice that I hear in my head is my voice, because I don’t even remember what anybody else’s voice sounds like.”

Because my partner and I encourage our children to think critically, she’s able to comprehend her own mind and how it functions. Voices in the mind is really just our own voice. Wow, how simple is that? It never had to be “God’s” voice or some other voice being downloaded into the psyche. This is actually something that wouldn’t be far fetched. At this very moment, every word that I type is being spoken in my mind first.

So the next time you vocalize the words, “God said” or “God told me to tell you”, try to consider that there is no way to prove the words you are about to speak. INNER/OVER/UNDERstand that people living on this earth have a BIRTHRIGHT to tell you “No thank you” or “I don’t believe that.” And just because you are accustomed to people in your reality accepting the things that you say, it doesn’t make it okay. Once you venture outside of that box, you will soon realize the error of your ways.

If you want to convince someone to do something because you want to be a helpful friend, then just say that! There is no need to use “God” to try to convince someone to believe the things that you say. This is a very manipulative tool that many are using to almost force a person to do what they say. And that’s completely out of line because now you aren’t allowing others to practice free will. If you can’t produce a recording of that voice to provide proof that something was whispered to you, then it may be best to refrain from telling others “God said.”

You can use the emotion of love and concern to show a person that you wholeheartedly care about their well-being. You will most likely get a better response by trying this method.

The next time I hear “God said” or “God told me to tell you,” I am going to politely respond with “GOD AIN’T SAID A GOT-D@M# THANG!! YOU said that!”

Aside from the humor that I find in this statement of “God said,” I really hope this can inspire free thinking. If we all used our common sense and asked questions whenever someone says, “God told me to tell you,” it would keep us from being manipulated and living a life that is controlled by someone else. I hope we can all heal from religious manipulation and walk freely in who we desire to be on this planet. Let’s crush this division and all come together to benefit humanity. Maybe that is what “God” would truly be saying to his or her creation, if a being of such existed. These are just my thoughts, though.

Paz……Amor………Serenidad.
